Food Lion Feeds Joins the Fight Against Hunger - “The Great Pantry Makeover” comes to Fayetteville

In celebration of Feeding America's Hunger Action Month, Food Lion Feeds will donate more than 1,200 service hours and more than 1 million meals through its inaugural "The Great Pantry Makeover" event. During the month-long volunteer service event, hundreds of Food Lion associates will volunteer at 38 local food pantries, which will help the grocer take another step toward its commitment of providing 500 million meals by the end of 2020.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina was asked to nominate a member agency that they felt could benefit from a makeover. The New Testament Church of God in Fayetteville, NC was chosen to be one of the 38 recipients to receive a makeover. They currently distribute two Saturdays per month and serve approximately 100 households a month.

Wanting to expand their reach, they decided to open a second pantry location on the opposite side of town from where they currently serve. “We knew that the New Testament Church of God wanted to open a second pantry where no current pantry was at. They knew the need was high and there was a large, poverty-stricken senior population there,” explains Cortez Phillip, SHFB Agency Relations Manager. “So far in 2015, they have distributed over 76,835 pounds of food at their one location. The second location would allow them to serve more individuals who may not be receiving the assistance they need. As the ministry expands, they want to be able to provide the same level of assistance at multiple locations.”

Last week, Food Lion’s “Great Pantry Makeover” took place, stocking New Testament Church of God’s pantry with 2,756 lbs of fresh produce. The produce will be used to create approximately 20,229 meals for those in need. “We are so excited that Food Lion Feeds has chosen to join us in the fight against hunger and is doing so in such an impactful and unique way,” says Phillip.
