Doing More Good with Head Start

Action Pathways Head Start volunteer and parent, Alysia Haddox, has been giving her time to the early childhood development program for a little over a year now. Her commitment arose while she was enrolled in Action Pathways Early Head Start program, which allows eligible pregnant women to enter the program to ensure early childhood development efforts can begin as early as possible, even before birth. Currently, Ms. Haddox gives her time to assist teachers in the classroom and also as a member of Head Start’s Policy Council, a committee comprised of community partners and Head Start parents empowered to help govern Head Start without actually interfering in the day-to-day operations of the program.

Ms. Haddox said it was important for her to be involved, especially having a young child enrolled in Head Start, so that she can be more aware of what happens day in, and day out, at the Head Start facilities. “[As far as] Policy Council, putting in the time and effort to look over these mandates…….for me, it's knowing I have a hand in things and having first-hand knowledge [of knowing what’s going on],” said Alicia about why she gives her time.

For Ms. Haddox, she says her journey of giving to Action Pathways Head Start started purely out of curiosity for the opportunities Head Start provides for both children and parents. While pregnant with her son, one-year old Robert, Ms. Haddox volunteered frequently with Action Pathways Head Start Southern Avenue location, reading to children and assisting Head Start staff where necessary. “I got to learn a lot about Head Start while carrying my son and became more interested in helping oAlysia1New.jpgut,” Ms. Haddox reflected. “by the time he was here, I was representing Southern Avenue!”

“Volunteering for Head Start is good opportunity to give back and learn how teachers are helping our children be the best they can be and setting the stage for the rest of their lives.”
