Inaugural Sort-A-Rama Gathers 100 Volunteers to Pack 50,000 Meals for Children This Summer

(Fayetteville, NC) – May 22, 2018 – On Thursday, May 24th, Second Harvest Food Bank of South East North Carolina (SHFB), an Action Pathways program and member of Feeding America, will host their inaugural Sort-A-Rama. This event is a half-day volunteer-driven project to have fun and make a meaningful difference in the community. Sort-A-Rama offers employees of its presenting partners an impactful opportunity to enjoy the best of volunteerism while teambuilding by packing food for distribution across the Food Bank’s seven-county service area. To accomplish this, 100 volunteers from Presenting Partners Food Lion Feeds, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, and Union Home Mortgage will gather at the Food Bank spending half the day sorting 50,000 meals for children in need during the summer months.

Events like Sort-A-Rama provide a meaningful way for our associates to directly engage in helping to feed those in our community who need a helping hand, especially during the summer months when childhood hunger rises given schools are closed. Whether it's in a Food Lion store, at Sort-A-Rama or anywhere in our community, we want Fayetteville to know: you can count on your local Food Lion team."

 

According to the North Carolina Breakfast Program, approximately 77% of students in Cumberland County alone are eligible for Free and Reduced Price meals in school for the 2017-2018 academic year. This means, when school is out there is possibly no breakfast and lunch for the nearly 40,500 children who depend on the program, not to mention the other six counties in the service area. With school meals not available, families rely on SHFB and its partner agencies for assistance. SHFB depends on the manpower of its volunteers and loyal partners to fight against hunger in our local communities, which is why it is looking forward to this inaugural event, and hopes to add to the numbers next year.

 

The event is held in several other cities in North Carolina, but this is the first time it is being hosted in Fayetteville. Reagan Greene Pruitt, Vice President of Integrated Marketing & Community Engagement of Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina shared, “Blue Cross North Carolina is committed to improving the health and well-being of all who call our state home. We’re proud to work alongside other community-minded businesses and volunteers to help our neighbors in need. While the causes of hunger are complex, the solution is pretty simple: get food to people who need it. Sort-a-Rama is one immediate way we can relieve hunger for some North Carolina families in need, but our goal must be to eliminate hunger entirely.”

 

During the summer there are lower donations for both food and funds, so Sort-A-Rama highlights the significances of helping families.
